Summer holidays in Thuringia

Summer holidays in Thuringia – nature, culture and enjoyment. This small, green federal state has around 2.2 million inhabitants and welcomes around 10 million guests every year. A popular holiday destination that is easy to reach from all directions in Germany. Thuringia’s state capital is Erfurt, on the enchanting Thuringian chain of cities. The towns of Eisenach, Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar and Jena are strung together like pearls along the A4 motorway. Leave the motorway at the Gotha exit and reach the gateway to the Thuringian Forest. What makes Thuringia so special: Short distances, contrasts and history.

A love of the forest. Hiking. Biking. Marvelling.

Even in imperial times, summer holidaymakers came to the Thuringian Forest from the dusty cities. As early as 1913, a book was published that focussed on the importance of the Thuringian climate for the recovery of the sick and the relaxation of workers and city dwellers. The high altitudes of the Thuringian Forest have a special microclimate, which was already recognised as having a healing effect at the time. From the middle of the 19th century, the railway stopped below Oberhof on its way to Milan. The steam locomotives had to recover from crossing the ridge and were supplied with new water. This is how the sophisticated Berliners recognised the beauty of the Thuringian Forest. In Oberhof, the children of the German Emperor stayed in the hunting lodge of the relatives of the House of Saxony, Coburg and Gotha. And with the imperial children came the entourage.

So began the summer holiday in the Thuringian Forest.

Summer holidays in Thuringia. multifaceted.

today like this – tomorrow like this

The beauty of a summer holiday in Thuringia is: hiking or mountain biking today and fine culture tomorrow. When you stay at a hotel in Oberhof, you have everything within a radius of just a few kilometres. You don’t even need a vehicle for an active summer holiday, except perhaps a mountain bike. You should start your cultural summer holiday in Schmalkalden and Meiningen or Ilmenau and Gotha. Charming little towns with historic – lovingly restored – old towns, castles, museums and theatres. You don’t need big cities for a day of culture here in the Thuringian Forest. History walks with you. Goethe, Bach, Schiller and the dukes of the great European royal houses all fell in love with Thuringia. We are sure that you too will lose your heart on your summer holiday in Thuringia and that you will not be on holiday with us in Oberhof for the last time.

Great culture in Thuringia

The Wartburg in Eisenach, the cathedral in Erfurt or the theatre in Weimar. High culture is also at home in Thuringia. From Oberhof, it’s only about an hour’s drive to the state’s cultural centres.

Why not discover the cities on a guided tour? A wide variety of guided tours are offered every day in our Thuringian towns. Mostly in historical costumes and with a specific theme. This is the best way to get to know the Thuringian towns. It is particularly worthwhile on a summer holiday, when you can stroll through the town centres and enjoy an ice cream and often delicious pastries in one of the many cafés. We recommend Erfurt for a shopping spree.
