New in summer 2024: Around 130 metres of ball tracks in the Rennsteiggarten Oberhof

We recommend a visit to Germany’s largest botanical garden for high alpine plants. The approximately 1 kilometre-long circular path through the garden, with wonderful views and secluded retreats, always leads to exciting and playful elements that allow us humans to experience the world of animals. The new highlight: in several places, the railings along the path have been replaced by long wooden ball tracks. The balls are available at the entrance and can be taken home for the next visit. Right next to Café Enzian in the garden, the barefoot path including the ball track is very popular. An entertaining break in an idyllic location.

Playfully explore nature

From the Hotel Thüringenschanze you can walk to the Rennsteiggarten in around half an hour. The path leads towards the spa gardens and then southwards along Zellaer Straße towards Rennsteig. The idyllic Rennsteiggarten Oberhof is hidden away at the roundabout. The lovingly tended botanical garden celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020.

A jewel of mountain flora near our Hotel Thüringenschanze

Not far from our Hotel Thüringenschanze in Oberhof is a botanical highlight that you shouldn’t miss – the Rennsteiggarten Oberhof. This unique garden, embedded in the picturesque landscape at the “Rondell” and situated at an impressive altitude of 868 metres on the Pfanntalskopf, extends over 7,000 m². Here you can admire high mountain flora from all over the world and enjoy breathtaking views.

A walk through the world of plants

The approximately one kilometre long circular trail takes you through various geographical zones. Start your walk at the lovingly designed central display area, which always offers new surprises throughout the season. On your way, you will wander through the flora of Asia, Europe, America, New Zealand and even the Arctic regions.

On sunny days, the garden is filled with a lively buzzing and humming as bumblebees and other insects enjoy the colourful flowers. Especially in June, the Asia area is a highlight for rhododendron lovers. The old stands exude a beguiling fragrance that transports your senses to another world long before you see the pink, yellow, white and orange works of art.

An excursion for the whole family

The Rennsteiggarten Oberhof is not only a paradise for plant lovers, but also an exciting destination for families. In recent years, a nature conservation garden, a moorland area and the Thuringian medicinal herb garden have been added. These areas not only offer interesting facts about the local flora, but also about the healing properties of the plants.

Play elements and information boards, which are distributed at various points in the garden, provide variety. Children can imagine what it is like to be a beetle among the blades of grass or to jump as high as a hare. Shelters and idyllic spots with spectacular views invite you to linger.

Practical information

The Rennsteiggarten Oberhof is open from the end of April to the end of October. Plan your visit and be enchanted by the variety of plants and the beauty of nature.
