Hiking holidays in the Thuringian Forest

With its numerous hiking trails and the famous and legendary Rennsteig high-altitude hiking trail, the Thuringian Forest is a paradise for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. The landscape inspires with its high peaks, deep forests, babbling brooks, meadows and pastures and is full of surprises. It can be rugged and challenging – but also mild and gentle. The same applies to the hiking trails.

Some are mainly suitable for professionals and experienced hikers, while others are suitable for beginners or even families with small children. That’s why everyone will find exactly the right trail for them here. Oberhof is an ideal starting point as it is centrally located directly on the Rennsteig. From here, there are numerous opportunities for inspiring outdoor experiences and adventurous hikes on the Rennsteig.

Hiking holiday at the hotel

Anyone dreaming of a hiking holiday should think about planning well in advance. For example, it is important to choose a hotel that is geared towards hikers and knows what is really good for guests after a long day in the great outdoors.

The Hotel Thüringenschanze in Oberhof specialises in hikers. There are drying rooms for clothes and shoes, a wellness area with sauna for relaxation and a restaurant with a wide range of dishes. If you stay overnight here, you don’t have to worry about catering for the journey.

The kitchen at the Hotel Thüringenschanze packs suitable packed lunches for hikers. So even those who are planning longer routes in the countryside and can’t find a restaurant along the way are well catered for.

Tips for your hiking trip

Before your trip It’s annoying when you arrive at your holiday destination and realise that you’ve packed the wrong things. That’s why you should make a checklist before travelling and check it point by point. It is also worth studying hiking maps before travelling and choosing suitable paths and routes. Then you can match your equipment to them.

Our tips:

  • If you want to walk long distances, plan a trip in the mild autumn and spring months.

The Rennsteig is a high-altitude hiking trail, the lowest points are 500 metres above sea level, the highest even 900 metres. It can therefore be much cooler in summer on certain tours and “higher up” than in the valley.

  • Choose paths that suit your fitness level. If the route has a large difference in altitude and you are not yet very experienced, it should never be longer than five kilometres. Only experienced hikers should plan longer tours.
  • Install hiking apps on your smartphone and pack good hiking maps.
  • Think about possible capricious weather conditions. Rainwear and warm jackets are just as important as sun cream and sunglasses.
  • Check your shoes, clothing and equipment before packing. You may need to buy something new.
  • Remember: not far from the Hotel Thüringenschanze is the H2Oberhof wellness centre with numerous saunas and a variety of swimming pools. You should always pack your swimming costume for a hiking holiday in Oberhof.

Hiking

Good to know:

The Rennsteig ladders provide variety

Hikes on the Rennsteig differ from tours on other famous hiking trails. The Rennsteig is almost 170 kilometres long and runs right through the Thuringian Forest – but as a hiker, you don’t necessarily have to walk it from one end to the other. Thanks to the Rennsteig ladders, there are numerous other options. They make a holiday in the Thuringian Forest particularly varied.

These Rennsteig ladders are small side paths that – like the rungs on a ladder – all lead to the Rennsteig. Hikers have a perfect choice here. There are short and easy paths and long, challenging ones. There are secluded footbridges that end at cosy and mysterious meadows – and there are lively ones with hiking pubs and restaurants that attract numerous tourists.

  • Some Rennsteig ladders are linked together and form interesting circular routes. Near the Hotel Thüringenschanze, for example, is the circular trail around the Lubenbach valley. The route is 13.6 kilometres long with a medium level of difficulty. The trail leads via Zella-Mehlis and the Bärenstein viewpoint.

Easy, medium and difficult trails

There are hiking trails of all levels of difficulty on the Rennsteig. Beginners therefore also feel at home here. However, experienced hikers are also happy to be able to walk an easy trail from time to time, while beginners have an ideal place here to slowly increase their performance. You can choose a short hike of just four kilometres to start with. At the end, after several days, you may be fit enough to tackle a longer and more challenging route.

Examples:

  • The Sportstättenweg is only 4.3 kilometres long and barrier-free. It leads past the town’s famous sports facilities. It is also suitable for families with pushchairs and wheelchair users.
  • The Herrenweg is 4.6 kilometres long, starts just a few minutes’ walk from the Hotel Thüringenschanze and ends at the “Zur Wegscheide” inn. A popular walk for anyone who wants to enjoy a hearty meal afterwards.
  • The “Zum Forsthaus Sattelbach” trail is 6.8 kilometres long, but leads up to an altitude of 873 metres. The trail is moderately difficult and is particularly recommended in the summer months due to its high altitude.
  • The trail around the Ohratal dam is particularly varied thanks to its views of the reservoir. However, it is 14.4 kilometres long and has a difference in altitude of 289 metres. So you need to be in good shape! However, if you take a whole day and plan plenty of breaks, the trail is also suitable for inexperienced hikers. Particularly practical: it is a circular route and you can easily return to your starting point.
  • The summit trail is a challenging tour for all hikers in very good physical condition. Nevertheless, some people will reach their limits here. The trail is 30.9 kilometres long and there are several differences in altitude to overcome – together they amount to 958 metres. The trail leads to the surrounding 900 metre peaks, with the Große Beerberg being the crowning highlight. The effort is rewarded with marvellous views.

Nordic feeling in the Thuringian Forest

The Thuringian Forest is of course not just a paradise for hikers – winter in particular shows its most beautiful side here with its white fairytale landscape. Oberhof is one of the German cross-country skiing centres and therefore bears the title “DSV nordic active region”. Many of the local trails are labelled as “nordic active trails” and are easily accessible from the Hotel Thüringenschanze. Two trails directly on the Schneekopf are particularly popular. The trails are also ideal for Nordic walking in the summer months. So you don’t necessarily have to wait for snow if you want to experience the Nordic feeling up close.
