Sports facilities in Oberhof
The origins of Oberhof’s winter sports success date back to the early days. The first Thuringian winter sports club was founded in Oberhof. Berlin’s high society from the imperial court circles gathered here.
At that time, the plan was to extend the summer season. The numerous holidaymakers during the summer season were also to find employment in winter. The summer resort offered too little for the growing holiday resort. Oberhof’s pioneers, such as Dr Curt Weidhaas, looked for alternatives to boredom and to take advantage of the climatic conditions. So they looked around Norway and returned home with cross-country skis, which were still unknown at the time. The beginning of great success.
22 January 1905 – The first competition at a sports facility in Oberhof. The Thuringian Winter Sports Association was founded that afternoon. You can discover evidence of over a hundred years of history of winter sports facilities in Oberhof on the “Historical Sports Facilities Hiking Trail”. It is only a few minutes’ walk from the hotel to the start of the circular hike. Walk in the footsteps of the courageous founders. Daring pioneers of winter sports wrote history.
The start of the “Historic sports facilities” circular trail is located at the ski jump on the Wadeberg from our hotel. Today, the display boards bear witness to the beginning of winter sports success in Oberhof.

The first competition – the Armeespartakiade – marked the beginning of an era. Since then, World Cup biathlon races have been held regularly.
